Key Stage 3

 Years 7-9

When you join us in September next year, the first foreign language you will learn is French. You will continue to learn French in Years 8 & 9 and in Year 9 you will have the opportunity to learn German if you have shown an aptitude for language learning.

The Department plans to offer Spanish from September 2006 (Click on the word Spanish for updates)

Staff

The Modern Foreign Languages Department consists of 4 modern linguists:

- Mrs Keri Bosley - Head of Modern Foreign Languages (German/French)

- Mrs Claire Harris - Second in Department (French/Welsh)

- Mrs Kate Neill - Teacher of French & German

- Mrs Valerie Carter - Teacher of French

Lessons

You will receive two lessons of French per week in Year 7 and in Year 8. Each lesson lasts one hour. In Year 9 you will continue to receive two lessons of French per week If you have attained a high level of competence in your French studies you will also receive one lesson of German per week. If you need to improve your French you will receive an additional lesson of French in order to boost your National Curriculum level. This extra lesson will focus on speaking and listening skills.

Books and Equipment

The Department has recently invested in brand new courses for Key Stage 3 and 4 French (“Expo” and “Metro”) and for the introduction of German we use “Lernpunkt Deutsch”.

We feel that as a Department we are well equipped, with access to the very latest foreign language teaching and learning materials. During lessons, your child will have full access to a wealth of support materials.

The Department has a limited supply of dictionaries so it would be advantageous if you could purchase your son/daughter a small French-English dictionary for use in the classroom and at home.

Expectations

Parents can help by:

  • Helping your child to find the best way to learn vocabulary and phrases by heart.
  • Checking that homework is being completed to the best of your child's ability and handed in on time.
  • Encouraging pupils to seek help with problems prior to their next languages lesson.

Pupils can help themselves by:

  • always having the right equipment
  • listening carefully to their teacher and to others
  • always completing their homework
  • learning vocabulary on a regular basis
  • checking their work carefully for spelling and grammar
  • asking for help BEFORE the home work is due in

Trips and Exchanges

In Year 7, there is an annual trip to Paris and “ Parc Astérix”, usually in the summer term. The French Exchange with Concarneau, Brittany is not running at present due to organisational problems on the French side, but your teacher will keep you informed of the latest developments on trips and exchanges and future planned visits to France. The PE Department runs an annual ski trip often to the French, Italian or Austrian Alps. This is a very popular school visit and is open to all pupils.

We have a partner school in Blaubeuren, Germany. This is a charming town in the Swabian Alps and is the official twin town of the borough of Brecknock. There have been several successful exchange visits in the past and the department intends running the next exchange in October 2005. The exchange is open to all pupils from Year 9. The History department also runs a popular trip to Berlin.
