French at Crickhowell High SchoolAll pupils study French in Years 7 to 9 and can choose to carry on with French in Years 10 and 11. The study of Welsh is compulsory until the end of Year 11.Students with an aptitude for languages complete a taster course in German in Year 9 and may opt to study German in addition to French in Years 10 and 11. It is possible to study French, German and Welsh in Years 10 and 11. French, German and Welsh also available at AS and A2 Level in Years 12 and 13. In Years 7 to 9, we use the Expo coursebooks 1 and 2 supplemented with departmental resources. All students have access to the coursebook in lessons and all students have a personal copy of the Expo exercise book. All four skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking are tested regularly, normally at the end of every Module in Years 7 to 9. Results are reported in the form of a National Curriculum Level for each skill and an overall average level. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on these results and to develop targets to help them improve. In Years 10 and 11, we use the Métro coursebooks 3 and 4 which are differentiated for targeted grades A* to C and D - G. All pupils have access to their own coursebook in lessons and and all pupils have personal copies of the Metro exercise books In Years 10 and 11, tasks are set in many of the modules which are marked to GCSE criteria. Progress is also monitored via the end of Year 10 exam and in Year 11 by the Trial GCSE exam.
